About Us
Our Land Has Always Welcomed Company
At 5401 Ashland City Highway, the land has a long history of gathering. According to stories passed down by locals, it was once home to a lively riverfront bar called Locust Cove, the inspiration for our name. It was the kind of place you could reach by boat, grab a drink, pick up bait, and hear music drifting across the water. The bar is long gone, but the land still holds that same feeling of welcome and ease.
Long before that, this area was used by Indigenous peoples as a vital hunting ground. The land shaped by movement and a lasting relationship with the river. Over thousands of years, many different tribes are believed to have passed through the region, including ancestors of the Chickasaw, Cherokee, and Choctaw. We’ve found arrowheads, tools, and other quiet reminders of the generations who came before us.
But for us, this place holds a far more personal story.
For more than a decade through the ’90s and into the mid-2000s this land belonged to Houston’s best friend and became a second home to him. After his friend’s tragic passing, the property was sold. Years later, Houston tracked down the new owners and made it his mission to bring the land back into the hands of someone who cherished it.
For the past fifteen years, this land has been a refuge. A place where our family could slow down and return to what matters. Locust Tree Cove is now an extension of that sense of belonging. It’s an invitation to share in the peace and purpose we’ve found here.
Meet the Owner
Houston’s roots run deep in Nashville and even deeper in the values of hard work, family, and stewardship. He grew up here and joined his family’s roofing and sheet metal business, RD Herbert & Sons, at an early age. Over the course of nearly 40 years, he helped lead and grow the company with the same dedication his family had poured into it for generations.
Eventually, Houston felt called to something quieter and more grounded in the rhythms of land and river. After selling the business, he turned his focus to building Locust Tree Cove, where he could bring together his love of craft, his care for the environment, and a desire to build something lasting for the next generation.
Locust Tree Cove is more than a retreat. It’s the next chapter in a family story, one Houston hopes to pass on to his two sons and daughter. A new kind of legacy, rooted in care and intention.
Meet the Director of Guest Happiness
Every good place has a guardian spirit. Ours happens to have four legs and a tail. Sky is our Australian Shepherd–Blue Heeler mix who holds the very important title of Director of Guest Happiness. Though she’s a fairly new addition to the family, she’s quickly made herself at home and she’ll make you feel the same way, greeting you with full-body wiggles and unmistakable excitement.
Sky is Houston’s constant companion, often seen trotting by his side or scouting the trail just ahead. She’s fallen in love with the land the same way we have, learning the curves of the riverbank and the best shady spots to rest after a long walk. Curious, loyal, and always up for a new adventure, she’s become an essential part of daily life here.
With her joyful energy, gentle spirit, and deep love for this place, Sky helps set the tone for what we hope you’ll experience during your stay: a sense of calm and connection.
